Researching a client before your first stage interview
Whether you apply directly or go through a recruitment agency for a position, researching your prospective employer is something you should do. Most of us know this but through experience, I have heard about candidates who do not prepare and this often leads to the employer thinking ‘does this person actually want the job?’
Researching your potential employer helps you gain a better understanding of the company; from their beginnings to their aspirations for the future. It gives you more of a clear picture of what they do and who they are. You will also feel more confident before you go for your interview, it will help to calm your nerves once you feel more ‘knowledgeable’ about their company.
So, how can you prepare?
Your first port of call is their website and head straight for the ‘about us’ part. Usually there are links you can follow that will take you to the timelines of their company if they have one.
Check out the ‘Team’ – See who works there already, who your potential colleagues could be.
Go to LinkedIn – look at their profiles. If you have the name of the person who is interviewing you, check them out and see what they have done previously, it will give you a better idea of the people who work within the organisation.
Write down some key points about the client’s history. This can sometimes solidify the points in your mind. You can also carry your notes with you if you arrive early for your interview, this will help to refresh your memory before actually engaging in an interview.
Think about why you want to join your prospective company. Again, link this to what the company has done and what they hope or plan to do for their future. Employers want to know why you like them, what are you attracted to about them? You won’t know the answers to these questions unless you have done your research.
Researching your potential employer is only part of your overall preparation, but it is a pivotal one. You may have researched them a little before applying but you should do an in-depth search on them. Apart from your potential employers’ website, there are other, reputable sites, that you can go onto and view what others have said about the organisation, whether customers or past/present employees. Don’t necessarily believe all you see on these sites however but it can give you another viewpoint on the organisation as part of your preparation.
So always remember, preparation is key and is something as a job seek you should naturally do. If you are a school-leaver or graduate looking for a new role, then you should get into the habit of doing your research as this will boost your confidence and will prepare you for certain questions that will certainly come your way regarding your knowledge of who you are applying for.
